Configuring Agent Behavior

StarZero Agents's default settings work well for most users, but if you want to fine-tune how the AI team operates, you have full control over each agent's configuration.

Accessing Agent Settings

  1. Click Customize in the sidebar
  2. Go to the Agents tab
  3. You'll see a list of all available agents

What You Can Configure

AI Model

Each agent can be powered by a different AI model. Different models have different strengths:

  • Some models are faster but less nuanced
  • Some are better at creative tasks
  • Some excel at precise, structured work

Available models come from several providers: Google (Gemini), Anthropic (Claude), OpenAI (GPT), DeepSeek, Moonshot (Kimi), Zhipu (GLM), and others through OpenRouter. You can mix and match — for example, use a fast model for search and a more capable model for analysis.

Each model in the selector shows two icon ratings — Intelligence and Cost — so you can quickly compare options. The Intelligence rating is based on independent industry benchmarks that measure how well a model handles complex multi-step tasks (the kind StarZero Agents performs). The Cost rating reflects what a model typically costs to complete a whole task, so a model that's pricier per word but more efficient can still rate as cheaper. See Model Comparison Stats for details.

The Motion Graphics Agent offers a shorter list of models suited to design work.

If you're not sure which model to pick, the defaults are a great starting point. You can always experiment later.

Custom Rules

Custom rules are plain-English instructions that shape how an agent behaves. They're like standing orders for your production team.

Examples of useful custom rules:

For the Search Agent:

"Always include timestamps in search results" "Prefer clips longer than 5 seconds"

For the Analysis Agent:

"Keep summaries under 200 words" "Always identify the speaker for each quote"

For the Producer:

"Always use word-by-word captions" "Default to 9:16 aspect ratio for all projects"

For the Motion Graphics Agent:

"Use the brand colours #0A84FF and #111111 and the Inter font" "Keep lower-thirds in the bottom-left corner, about half the frame width"

For the Critique Agent:

"Pay special attention to audio levels at clip transitions" "Flag any clip shorter than 2 seconds"

Custom rules are persistent — they apply to the current chat and all future chats until you change them.

Critique Location

The Critique Agent can review your work at different points in the process. Choose the option that fits your workflow:

  • Inline QC — Quality checks happen during editing, giving you feedback as the project is built. Good for interactive, hands-on workflows.
  • Task Agent — Quality review happens after the Task Agent completes a workflow. Good for autonomous tasks where you want a final review.
  • Disabled — No automatic quality checks. Use this if you prefer to review everything yourself.

When to Customize

You probably don't need to change anything if:

  • You're new to StarZero Agents and still learning the basics
  • The default results are meeting your needs
  • You don't have strong preferences about AI models

Consider customizing if:

  • You have brand guidelines or style rules that should always be followed
  • You want a specific model for a specific agent (e.g., a faster model for search)
  • You're building a standardized workflow for your team
  • You want to adjust how and when quality reviews happen

Tips

  • Start with custom rules before switching models. Often, the default model just needs better instructions.
  • Be specific in your rules. "Make it better" won't help. "Always start cutdowns with the most provocative quote" will.
  • Test changes incrementally. Change one thing at a time so you can see what impact it has.
  • Rules apply to all chats. Remember that custom rules persist, so keep them general enough to apply broadly. For one-off instructions, just include them in your chat message instead.
