/compact — Free Up Context Space

The /compact command summarizes your older conversation history so the assistant has more room to work. Long sessions with lots of searches, edits, and back-and-forth can fill up the assistant's context window — compacting keeps things running smoothly.

How to Use It

Type /compact in the chat input and send it:

/compact

The assistant will briefly show a "Compacting..." status, then a collapsible summary appears in your chat. You can expand it at any time to review what was summarized.

What Happens

• Your full conversation stays visible in the chat — nothing disappears.
• Behind the scenes, older messages are condensed into a summary so the conversation can continue smoothly.
• The assistant can then continue the conversation naturally, picking up where you left off without losing track of your goals, preferences, or decisions.

Automatic Suggestions

You don't have to remember to compact yourself. StarZero Agents watches your context usage and shows a suggestion banner above the message input when it's time to consider compacting.

There are two levels of suggestion:

• Early heads-up — appears when the conversation is long enough that the assistant may start losing track of earlier details. This is a gentle nudge: you can click Compact to run it immediately, or Dismiss to keep going. The banner stays away until your context grows significantly more.
• Context limit warning — appears when the conversation is approaching the maximum context size. At this point, compacting is strongly recommended to avoid hitting the hard limit. The banner offers a Compact button but can't be dismissed — it stays visible until you compact or the context shrinks.

When to Use It

• You see the compaction suggestion — the banner appears when context usage is high, which is the most common trigger.
• The conversation is getting long and you notice the assistant struggling to keep up or making mistakes about earlier context.
• You're running into context limits — if the assistant warns about running out of space, compacting frees up room.
• You've finished one phase of work and want to start a new direction without losing the history of what was done.

What It Looks Like

While compaction is running, an animated progress indicator appears in your chat with playful status messages. Once complete, a collapsible summary replaces the progress indicator. After compaction, the context usage bar resets — the suggestion banner disappears and you have room for more conversation.

Good to Know

• The command only works when the assistant is not actively processing a message. Wait for any in-progress response to finish before using it.
• You can compact multiple times in the same session as the conversation grows.
• Your clips, analysis results, video project, and to-do list are not affected by compaction — only the conversation history is summarized.
